A U.S. military helicopter crash landed off the Japanese island of Okinawa today, injuring seven people on board.

According to the U.S. pacific command, the UH60 black hawk performed a "hard-deck landing" on the USNS Red Cloud.

Aerial footage provided by Japan’s national broadcaster shows the chopper with part of its tail broken off on the U.S. ship's deck.

U.S. pacific command said that of the 17 people on board the helicopter, seven were injured and transported to a U.S. naval hospital in Okinawa.

The incident happened about 20 miles east of Okinawa.

Military officials said the chopper was conducting a training mission at the time.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Okinawa, an island more than 900 miles southwest of Tokyo, is home to the bulk of U.S. military forces stationed in japan.
