Power has been restored to thousands of Redding Electric Utility customers in East Redding after service was knocked out Tuesday afternoon.

A widespread power outage was reported at 2:20 p.m. when a transformer blew at the REU Canby substation.

A spokesperson with REU says the transformer issue caused outages in the area of Hilltop Drive and Cypress Avenue, and impacted a large commercial area, including the Mount Shasta Mall.

REU says the outage knocked out service to 2,593 customers, but power was restored to most within an hour. All customers were back up by 4 p.m.

Several traffic lights in East Redding were temporarily offline due to the outage, but fortunately no accidents were reported.
