Our Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week is one of 11 upperclassmen on the Willows high school volleyball team, but Ally Brunner has carved out her niche as one of the most hard-working and competitive players on the court.
"I started playing when I was in 7th grade and to get to where I'm at I've had to work hard at every practice," said Brunner.
Some athletes succeed largely on raw talent. Ally Brunner has never been one of those athletes.
"There was definitely a lot of mistakes when I started playing and a lot of confusion with the rotation and my hitting, well that didn't develop until I don't know, my sophomore year probably," said Brunner.
More recently, Brunner's drive to improve led her to join a club team and attend several volleyball camps.
"I'm very competitive so I've always wanted to be better than I was the day before," said Brunner.
That competitive spirit and determination carries over to the classroom, where Ally boasts a 4.0 GPA. Next year she'd like to attend San Diego State with big career plans in mind.
"I want to major in nursing," said Brunner.
For the time being though, she'll continue to use her competitive spirit and determination to dominate on the volleyball court.
