A search for a missing 13-year-old ended Sunday afternoon when sheriff’s deputies allegedly caught the boy burglarizing a downtown Burney restaurant.

It all started a little before 3:30 p.m. Sunday when a woman called the Shasta County sheriff’s office to report her 13-year-old son missing. She told deputies their family been traveling along Highway 299 East when she pulled over to give everyone a chance to rest.

The 13-year-old became upset during an argument with his mother and ran into a heavily wooded area just northeast of the Sierra Pacific Industries Mill.

With temperatures in the area Sunday night projected to dip to around 14 degrees an urgent search was conducted by deputies and a CHP helicopter.

Just after 5 p.m. dispatchers received a call of an “In Progress Burglary” at Anna’s Country Kitchen in downtown Burney, forcing two deputies to halt their search efforts and head to the restaurant.

Deputies say that when they arrived the missing teen was inside the restaurant stealing food.

The boy was arrested and booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of burglary, criminal trespassing and vandalism.
