One lane was closed on southbound Highway 99 near the 20th street exit in Chico this morning after a man jumped from the 20th Street overpass. As of 11:30 a.m. traffic reopened for both southbound lanes.
The first call was made at approximately 10:52 a.m. for an apparent suicide attempt on the 20th street overpass above Highway 99. As Chico Police officers were en route to the scene, the man jumped from the overpass. The victim fell an estimated 20 feet before landing on the guardrail. The man suffered major injuries to both of his legs, but was not struck by a vehicle. He was eventually transported to Enloe Medical Center. CHP conducted traffic control of the southbound lanes, but all lanes were reopened within 20 minutes of the initial 911 call. The incident is being investigated by the Chico Police Department as an apparent suicide attempt.
