San Jose police shoot man allegedly hacking mother in street

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Police in San Jose shot and wounded a man as he allegedly hacked his mother with an ax in a city street.

The San Jose Mercury News says the mother and 26-year-old son are both hospitalized in stable condition after Wednesday morning's violence (

Police in the neighborhood for an unrelated car crash came upon the man allegedly chasing his mother with a large ax outside their home.

Police Lt. Tom Sims says police shot the man after seeing him strike his mother with the ax. A neighbor told reporters the son had mental health issues.

The two officers who fired have been placed on leave pending an investigation. Police did not immediately respond to a call from The Associated Press for comment.
