SAN DIEGO (AP) - Police say four people were killed when a speeding car ran a red light, hit a traffic pole and was sheared in half in Palm City.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick says the car ran the light around 2 a.m. Sunday, hit a van, then careened into the pole that sliced it in half.

Battrick says three people were ejected from the car and died. A fourth person died inside the car and one was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

He says two of the five people in the van had minor injuries.

None of the occupants have been identified.

It was not immediately known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
