Aug 9, 2013 12:26 PM

As of 8 a.m. Friday, the Salmon River Complex Fire has engulfed over 9,100 acres. The estimated containment date is still unknown as over 1,100 fire personnel enter day 10 of battling the blaze.

Around 50 structures remain threatened and the total cost of the fire to date is estimated at $6.6 million, according to the U.S. Forest Service’s press release. The fire is currently 16% contained.

Fire Crews hope to take advantage of the today’s expected moderate fire conditions and construct a direct line along the north edge in Specimen and Jackass Creeks. Crews will work hard to chip slash to clear contingency lines ahead of the fire at Mule Bridge, Idlewild and Swayers Bar. Because of anticipated to predicted lightning activity, team resources will prepare for an initial attack on the Salmon/Scott River Ranger District north of the North Fork Salmon River within the district boundary.

The fire continues to burn approximately four miles west of Sawyers Bar. An evacuation advisory is still in effect for all residents along the North Folk Salmon River from Keely Gulch to Idlewild and Mule Bridge to the Marble Mountain Wilderness Boundary. Residents who wish for more information regarding evacuations can visit

An evacuation center has been established by the Red Cross at Etna Union High School on 400 Howell Avenue in Etna. Domestic pets may also be taken to the high school where kennels will be available. Large animals may be taken to the Dean McBroom Ranch at 1442 Sawyers Bar Road, Etna. Call 530-467-3711.

The U.S. Forest service stated the fire is expected to have limited spread northeasterly into the Sawmill Gulch due to scattered precipitation in the area yesterday afternoon. A portion of the Klamath National Forest near the fire area is closed to public entry. See the Klamath National Forest Website at for a description and map.

Sawyer’s Bar Road is closed to public traffic from Etna Summit to the Forks of Salmon. Residents, with proof of residency, will be allowed through the closure.
