SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says he didn't mean to offend members of his city's police force with comments following a grand jury's decision not to indict an officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
The Sacramento Bee reported that on Monday night Johnson called the grand jury's decision an "injustice." Johnson spoke publicly after the announcement not to bring charges against Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown.
Dustin Smith, head of the Sacramento Police Officers Association, say the mayor's statement amounted to a slap in the face for law enforcement throughout the nation. Smith and Johnson met behind closed doors Tuesday to discuss the statement.
Johnson says he stands by his comments, but clarified that he did not intend to offend police elsewhere, especially not in Sacramento.
