SYDNEY (AP) - National Rugby League star Jarryd Hayne has sensationally quit the Parramatta Eels and plans to travel to the United States to try out for the National Football League.
In a statement posted on the Parramatta club's website Wednesday and widely reported in the Australian media, Hayne says he is withdrawing from Australia's squad for the Four Nations tournament.
His decision comes only two weeks after he was voted best player in the NRL.
The 26-year-old fullback was reported to have met with Seattle Seahawks team officials recently. Hayne did not identify which NFL clubs were interested in offering him a tryout.
Hayne says "today I can officially announce that I will be heading to the United States to pursue an opportunity to play American football."
