Police took a man into custody after an 11-hour standoff with police and SWAT teams in Chico Sunday night.

After allegedly robbing the Money Saver grocery store on Park Avenue around 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Edward James Walcott III, 30, of Chico, fled to a local apartment complex. Witnesses told officers the suspect had entered the apartment complex at 107 W. 16th and was holed up in one of the apartments.

Officers used a public address system to try to coax the robber out but got no response. Chico Police SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams were called in to evacuate four apartments adjacent to the one the suspect was in.

After obtaining a search warrant, SWAT teams used tear gas to enter the apartment and detain the suspect.

Edward Walcott has been identified as the suspect in the robbery. An investigation is still ongoing, but a replica firearm believed to have been the weapon in the robbery has been recovered along with other items linking him to the crime.

Walcott was booked into Butte County Jail for numerous felony charges.
