RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - The first Riverside County sheriff's dog killed in the line of duty has been remembered with tears and honors.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says about 1,200 people and 100 police dogs turned out Wednesday to honor Sultan at the War Dog Memorial in Riverside.

The German shepherd-Belgian malinois mix was shot on Jan. 21 as he went into the crawlspace of a Hemet home to search for a wanted suspect. The gunman then barricaded himself in the house and eventually was shot dead by deputies.

Sultan's partner, Deputy Mark Wallace, brushed back tears as he described Sultan's death during services. Wallace says he believes his four-footed partner saved his life.

The service included a color guard, a bugler playing taps and an honor line of police dogs.
