Crime problems in Bidwell Park was a primary topic at Chico Police Department's monthly advisory board meeting. Crime statistics from 2013 through 2015 shows more than 500 crimes have been committed in Bidwell Park, 166 of those being violent crimes like rape, assault and stabbings.

Deputy Police Chief David Britt says some of the more serious crimes are happening in Lower Park like armed robberies while Upper Park sees mostly petty crimes like thefts and vandalism.
One resident who wanted to remain anonymous lives near Lower Park and says houses in his neighborhood have been vandalized and a few have even seen home invasions.
Deputy Chief Britt says right now police are trying to re-grow their ranks to better respond to calls for service.

Britt says, "We are adding people back to our patrol units, we are adding back detective. With those detectives we're going to focus on those property crimes that we haven't been able to address as effectively because of the shortage."

Britt says there are a few things to keep in mind next time you're spending time around the area. He says keep valuables out of sight in Upper Park and be aware of your surroundings in Lower Park especially if traveling alone. Police say they do see an increase in crime when the weather starts to get warmer towards spring and summer.
