The Chico Police Department caught two burglars in the act on the 300 block of Cedar Street early this morning.
Just before 3 a.m. the department received a call from a woman who stated she believed someone was trying to break into her home. Officer Steve Houge responded to the 300 block of Cedar Street in less than a minute. As Hogue arrived he heard the sound of breaking glass, according to the department’s press release. One of the other responding officers found a broken flat screen television near a driveway and eventually found two men hiding in the yard of a residence.
The subjects, identified as Fransisco Anguina and Jose Mata, were both arrested. Police also located the suspect’s vehicle, a blue Ford Explorer, where they found items stolen from a nearby home. Officers woke the resident of that particular home who were unaware they had been burglarized. All of the stolen property, with exception of the broken flat screen television, was returned to the owners.
According to the department’s press release, the suspect’s reportedly admitted they had seen lights on in the victim’s house and knocked on the door to see if anyone was home. If anyone answered the door they intended to make up a name and ask for them. When no one answered the door, they checked the door and found it unlocked. The suspects then reportedly began removing items from the home. Both suspects were booked into the Butte County Jail on charges of residential burglary and prowling.
