(UPDATE) 3:12 p.m.-The Redding Police Department has just told Action News Now the infant remains in stable condition in Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento and is doing better and recovering well. The long-term effects of the assault are still unknown.
Stephen Rehmeier, 33, was back in court this morning after pleading not guilty to assaulting a 2-month-old infant girl on June 4. He is charged with a single count of felony child abuse with a special allegation of inflicting great bodily injury on a child under five. Rehmeier's preliminary hearing has been rescheduled to July 17 and 18 pending the gathering of medical records.
Earlier this month the Redding Fire Department and paramedics responded to a medical call at the La Quinta Inn on Hilltop Drive in Redding. Emergency response personnel eventually transported a two-month-old infant girl to a local hospital, then airlifted to Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento for treatment for a brain bleed, according to the Redding Police Department’s press release.
According to the Redding Police Department, Rehmeier came to the Department the next day and reportedly told investigators he was caring for the injured infant and her twin sibling at the hotel while their mother was at the pool. Rehmeier became frustrated when the victim would not stop crying and told officers he physically assaulted the baby.
