Referendum petitions for medical marijuana ordinance hit Chico streets

Opposing forces on the controversy over medical marijuana grows began gathering signatures in Chico today for a new medical marijuana referendum.

A political action committee called Butte County Citizens Against Irresponsible Government is working to fight the newly adopted county medical marijuana ordinance.

Some of the members were part of an ad hoc committee that formed the ordinance about a year ago.

They’re not okay with the ordinance adopted by supervisors yesterday, which amends the previous one by limiting marijuana grow sizes based on parcel sizes.

Brian Schrier is a petition manager helping campaign. He’s worked on ten local medical marijuana campaigns. This is his third in Butte County.

“They know how to talk to people and they know how to explain the issues professionally to get valid signatures so we can qualify these,” Schrier said. “Discovery pet management has a really large pool of professional circulators that we can continue to bring people in if we need to pick up the pace, or keep it as it is if everything's ok and we're on target.”

Schrier said they're pushing for 10,000 signatures within 30 days.

They’ll need about 7,600.
