A man was shot by a Redding homeowner Monday morning after he allegedly charged at her in a threatening manner as he was fleeing from sheriff's deputies.

A suspicious subject prompted deputies to respond to the Churn Creek Bottom area around 9 a.m. When they arrived, the suspect later identified as Dillon Lee Carmelo, fled the area and made gestures indicating he had a gun.

A reverse 911 call told area residents an armed and dangerous suspect was in the area.

A few minutes later, Carmelo ran through a backyard on East Niles Road as the homeowner was bringing her dogs inside. Having received the reverse 911 call just moments earlier, the woman was armed with a handgun. The suspect made a threatening move towards the woman and she shot him in the ankle.

The woman was interviewed by deputies, who determined she was acting in self-defense.

Carmelo was transported to a local hospital, and he will be booked into the Shasta County Jail for resisting arrest after receiving treatment.
