Officials with the Redding Fire Department have confirmed that a woman is dead after being rescued from an overnight apartment fire.

Crews were called out to a two story multiplex apartment building on South Street at around 1:30 a.m., with reports of flames in one of the units.

Firefighters found an unconscious adult female in the upstairs of the unit. After medical treatment was administered on scene, she was transported to Mercy Medical Center where she later died.

East and Continental Streets were shut down as the fire was put out. It was contained to the single unit.

Investigators are still looking into a cause.
