A Redding woman was arrested Sunday for suspicion of arson after she admitted to starting fire in a vacant home Friday evening and another at an abandoned commercial building Sunday morning.

Fire officials say they believe 23-year-old Ashley Kate Maertz was hallucinating on drugs when she set the fires, trying to "burn devils and evil spirits".

The first fire was reported at 6:38 p.m. Friday at a home on Churn Creek Road. The second fire was reported at 9:57 a.m. Sunday at 451 Hillmonte Dr. in Redding. Fire officials were able to quickly contain the fire and Redding Police located and arrested Maertz.

A fire investigator interviewed Maertz and she confessed to starting both fires.

She was booked into the Shasta County jail on a felony arson charge.
