Fire investigators have arrested a man they believe started a 23 acre fire that broke out in the Canyon Creek Road and Buenaventura Boulevard area of Redding Wednesday evening.

The Redding Fire Department was called to the area just after 6 p.m. When crews arrived they found an aggressively burning vegetation fire moving west, and threatening homes in an adjacent neighborhood.

Cal Fire teams were called in to assist the efforts of Redding fire crews and together they managed to keep the flames from reaching a handful of homes.

An investigation was launched immediately and it was determined some type of flammable device sparked the dry vegetation.

Investigators contacted 24-year-old Alan Ward, a local transient, and during questioning Ward reportedly admitted to starting the fire with a Coleman burner.

Ward was booked into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of recklessly starting a fire.
