The American Civil Liberties Union may sue Mercy Medical Center on behalf of two pregnant women denied tubal ligations due to the hospital's religious principles.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Monday that the two women plan to go to court unless the Catholic hospital changes its mind by Wednesday.

Mercy Medical Center says its general policy is not to provide sterilization unless necessary for "the cure or alleviation of a present and serious pathology."

Mercy Medical initially denied a tubal ligation to another Redding woman earlier this year, but relented under threat of a lawsuit.

Dignity Health, California's largest private health care system, owns 32 hospitals in the state. More than half are affiliated with the Catholic Church.
