The festivities have begun in Redding to kick off the 68th annual rodeo week.
From a mock bank robbery to a community barbecue today, the Asphalt Cowboys are setting the stage for an eventful week to come.
It's the week we've all been waiting for, and everyone here in Redding is excited especially one group of men who are passionate about promoting the rodeo.
Rodeo week is officially underway and the asphalt cowboys, a group started in 1953, are letting everyone know what we have in store.
"Rodeo week is just a big deal for this community,” Gary Moore, Asphalt Cowboy member. “You're going to see the best of the business here from country wide."
And the cowboys have some creative ways of promoting the event.
"There’s so many things going on this entire week,” he said. “Today we go around on a bus and we do all the business and bank judging for the decorations and we'll end up back here at the club house for a nice little barbecue with everybody this afternoon."
And as far as the bank robbery, well let's just say the cowboys weren't on their game
"They were goofing off is what happened, and they got away…again."
I’m here at this annual barbecue, as you can see behind me, the cowboys are getting rowdy, but hopefully they won’t be too partied out today because we have quite a week ahead of us.
There’s going to be a kids day, chili cook off, street dance, a kiddy pet day and of course a pancake breakfast where 10,000 people are expected to be fed. And that's just to name a few.
And the biggest draw is of course the 4 day rodeo, which will include a wrangler champion’s challenge on sat where rodeo champions from all over the country will compete. In previous years up to 8,000 people have attended.
Redding has a lot to be proud of with this rodeo, not only does this rodeo bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars to the local economy, I just learned that the Redding rodeo was inducted this year into the pro rodeo hall of fame.
