Redding residents angered over needles on downtown sidewalk

A photo making the rounds on social media shows a handful of needles littering a Redding sidewalk near downtown.

On Wednesday morning, a Redding resident took the photo above on Yuba Street and then one of her co-workers shared the picture on social media.

A handful of people on Facebook have speculated the syringes may be an accidental loss by someone with a medical problem, but he majority of commenters are placing the blame on Redding’s transient population.

In recent weeks, residents say they’ve noticed an increase in the amount of transients occupying the downtown area.

Redding Police Chief Robert Paoletti says the increase could be attributed to the cooler weather, and the relocation of the Redding Police Department from downtown to city hall.

Action News Now reporter Charlene Cheng is following the story Wednesday and will have a full report tonight at 5 and 6 p.m.
