Redding police were able to subdue a man who they say showed up at the police station hoping to have an officer shoot him to death.

Daniel Rock, 50, showed up at the Redding Police Department just after 8 a.m. Thursday holding a wooden four-by-four post about 3 feet to 4 feet in length in a "batters stance." He told officers, "This is my only option."

Officers used verbal commands to try and get Rock to give up, but he refused. Police say it looked like Rock attempted to harm himself earlier as evidenced by several cuts to his neck.

Police say it was clear Rock wanted officers to use lethal force on him.

An officer fired a bean bag round from a shotgun, striking Rock in the abdomen. The shot knocked him down, and he was taken into custody.

Rock was taken to Shasta Regional Medical Center where he was treated and evaluated before being booked into the Shasta County Jail for suspicion of assault on a peace officer.
