At approximately 2 a.m. this morning, a Redding Police officer approached two subjects riding bicycles near the 800 block of Milestoe Avenue in Redding. While questioning the subjects, the officer was notified by dispatch that Robert Barron and the other subject had warrants for their arrests (the name of the other subject is being withheld at this time due to an on-going investigation). The officer proceeded to take Barron into custody when Barron turned violent and attacked the officer. A violent struggle ensued, during which the officer discharged his firearm, striking Barron in the chest.

After a brief foot pursuit, Barron was taken into custody by the officer. Medical units responded and rendered aid to Barron. He was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest. His condition remains serious. The other suspect with Barron was uninjured and is currently being interviewed by detectives.

During the struggle the officer received undisclosed injures and was also taken to the hospital where he was treated and released (the nature of his injuries was not released due to an on-going investigation).

After the officer involved shooting, the Redding Police Department requested the Shasta County Sheriff's Office take over of the investigation per inter-agency protocol.

We will bring you further updates as it comes in.
