A Redding man is facing homicide charges after he allegedly crossed over the median of Highway 273 and slammed into another vehicle while under the influence.
The crash happened around 6:30 a.m., Thursday, at Highway 273 and Canyon Road, near Win River Casino.
Redding police say Vernon Lee Simon, Jr., 49, of Redding was headed northbound on Highway 273 when he crossed into the southbound lanes near Win Rover Casino. Simon slammed head-on into a white Ford Thunderbird, killing the driver. The driver of the Thunderbird has not been identified yet.
Investigators say Simon was driving under the influence of drugs, had a suspended license, and an outstanding warrant. He was booked into the Shasta County Jail for homicide, DUI with major injury, violation of probation, driving on a suspended license causing injury, an outstanding warrant for failure to appear, and no insurance.
