Redding K9 officer detains vehicle theft suspect

A routine vehicle check turned into much more Wednesday night when a Redding Police officer deployed a K9 to apprehend a felony suspect.

Redding Police Officer Jared Hebert located what turned out to be an occupied stolen vehicle off Highway 273 and Canyon Road in Redding. Hebert attempted to detain the driver of the vehicle, Pooky Khanthavang, 42, of Cottonwood, fled on foot. Hebert deployed his k9 partner, Cain, who was able to detain the suspect with the help of residents in the area.

The suspect was charged with felony evasion, motor vehicle theft, and resisting arrest. At the time of the arrest, the suspect was already on probation for narcotics violations and had outstanding arrest warrants.
