Redding family searching for Christmas tree rescued

A family of four has been rescued after their vehicle became stuck in the French Gulch area while they were searching for a Christmas tree Sunday afternoon.

Shasta County authorities began searching for Matthew Gertsch, his wife Jamie and their children Logan and Hannin, after Gertsch's mother told the sheriff's office the family failed to return home.

Deputies from the sheriff's office Redding patrol unti began a search for the family around 8 p.m. Sunday, but were unable to locate them.

Shasta County Search and Rescue volunteers were called in to search and were able to locate the family in their car around 4:15 a.m. Monday. Gertsch said they became high centered on a water bar across the road and were unable to get their vehicle out. Gertsch said he knew their location and they were planning on spending the night in the car, then walking out in the daylight.

Volunteers provided transportation for Matthew and his family back to Redding, where they were reunited with concerned family members.
