Redding Police ramped up drunken driving patrols this holiday season, and so far, officers said they have been effective.
Officers conducted one of several driving under the influence and driver’s license checkpoint at the intersection of Victor Avenue and Lazelle Court from 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday night.
A total of 609 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and 608 were screened. Of those, 17 stopped for further investigation and 10 were given sobriety tests.
During the checkpoint, one driver failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated. The driver was seen throwing items from the car window. The items were later determined to be bags of cocaine and methamphetamine.
The driver, Christopher Steven Costello, 30, was apprehended and charged with drunken driving and possession of a controlled substance.
The Redding Police Department will have officers working DUI Saturation Patrols and directed traffic enforcement throughout the New Year’s holiday.
