Redding crime rate edges downward

Crime in Redding is down for the first half of 2015, and violent crime is down by 13 percent.

Property crime is down two percent, but there have been 229 reported cases of vehicle thefts in Redding, and business owners say they’ve seen the property crime firsthand.

Redding Police Chief Robert Paoletti says he is happy the overall crime rate is down, but says he’s worried about crimes that go unreported.

The police department is working on getting new software that maps crime around the city in real time, and Chief Paoletti says the technology will help the department pinpoint problem areas much quicker.

The current technology only reports weekly trends.
