The 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee kicked off this week and a Redding 7th grader is one of 280 contestants vying to take home the title.
On Tuesday, competitors took their first written test, including both spelling and vocabulary questions. Those scores will determine which contestants will move onto the next round.
13-year-old Emily Grace Alldrin, a 7th grader at "The Learning Connection" in Redding is one of the contestants. Emily's vocabulary test results haven't been released yet, but she has spelled her first two words correctly, including the always difficult panophthalmitis.
When she's not spelling words none of us can pronounce, Emily plays violin, piano and viola. She also performs with a local fiddle group called Shingletown Bound.
If you want to see if you have what it takes to qualify for the spelling bee, you can take a sample test here.
