Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said this wreck was so serious that he dubbed it "Miracle on Montgomery Street." On February 24, Shaina Appleyard, 18, drove down Montgomery Street as speeds of up to 60 miles an hour, sped through a stop sign, then hit a car head-on, driven by a pregnant woman, with her 4 year old child in the back. Appleyard's car, with 4 passengers then slammed into two teenagers seated on a park bench, and into a tree. One of the teens was thrown 25 feet into a plate glass window. The other teen's head was nearly crushed by a tire. The pregnant woman suffered a broken pelvis, and had to eventually have her baby delivered via c-section. Appleyard had been huffing keyboard fumes and drinking. She was charged with felony DUI, among other charges, and is expected to be sentenced in August. She faces up to 15 years in prison.
