Shaina Appleyard, 18, was arraigned in a Butte County courtroom Wednesday. Appleyard is charged with DUI with Injury following Sunday's wreck on Montgomery Street. According to Butte County DA Mike Ramsey, Appleyard had been drinking alcohol and huffing keyboard spray before driving up to 60 miles per hour down Montgomery. Ramsey says she sped through a stop sign, then crossed the median, hitting a car driven by a pregnant woman who had her child strapped into a car seat in the back.
According to Ramsey, Appleyard's car then hit a bench with two teenagers seated on it. He says it is a miracle that neither teen was killed, because the girl was thrown 25 feet into a plate glass window which shattered on impact. He says the boy narrowly missed having his head crushed by a wheel, because the car was stopped by tree on the sidewalk. The pregnant woman is still in the hospital with a broken wrist and pelvis, according to Ramsey, but he says her fetus was unharmed. Ramsey is calling it a "miracle on Montgomery" because no one was killed. He also says Appleyard had been huffing keyboard fumes, and had been drinking. The results of her blood test have not come back yet. Appleyard's bail is set at $200,000. Her next court date is in March. Photo Courtesy of John Lowe with the Oroville Mirror.
