A prisoner being extradited from Oregon to Arkansas escaped custody during a bathroom stop in Lassen County, the sheriff’s office said.
Eric Williamson escaped during a stop at the Bogard Rest Area on Highway 44 around 8 p.m. Sunday.
Williamson, who escaped despite being restrained with a wrist chain and handcuffs, was being transported with several other inmates by Prisoner Transpiration Services, a private extradition company.
It is unclear why Williamson was in custody or why he was being extradited. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, black jeans and black work boots.
The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol unsuccessfully searched the area for Williamson Sunday night.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who comes a hitchhiker to use caution.
