Redding Police and the Shasta Sheriff's Office is teaming up with Health and Federal Drug Officials to offer a free drop-off site for expired, unused and unwanted prescription and over the counter medications.
It takes place Saturday, October 26th in the Sears parking lot of the Mt. Shasta Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Authorities say medicines that sit in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high. As many as 54% or people who abuse prescription drugs obtain them from family and friends, often stealing from home medicine cabinets.
Past methods of disposing of unused medicines like flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards. That's why you're encouraged to take advantage of Saturday's free drug drop off event.###
