Powell's Sweet Shoppe Celebrates 5th Anniversary

It's been 5 years since Powell's Sweet Shoppe first opened it's doors in downtown Chico, and this week the business is sharing the special milestone with the community. From chocolate to taffy and everything in between Powell's has it all. The popular candy store opened in July of 2007, and has been catering to peoples' sweet tooths ever since. It was after working at the very first Powell's in Sonoma County that owner Nancy Carlson decided to open a location in the north state with her husband Hal.

"We decided to bring Powell's to Chico because of not only the college but just the great downtown that it has to offer," says Carlson.

One thing Carlson says hasn't changed since they opened is the reaction from customers when they walk into the mini-candyland. Although Powell's celebrates its anniversary every year, Hal and Nancy's daughter Kristin says this one is significant.

"I think 5 years is a pretty big milestone especially in an economy like ours. To celebrate 5 years having opened right at the downturn and still be going strong and having our doors open, we wanted to celebrate that," she says.

And celebrate they will. Powell's will be hosting a big birthday bash on Saturday to commemorate the milestone with fun and games for the whole family starting at 10 a.m. The business has also made a name for itself by giving back to the community. The shop is currently hosting its Summertime Almond Bowl in which the store will be donating 20% of its proceeds to the Chico and Pleasant Valley High sports programs through Friday. With 5 years come and gone, the store's owners are already looking ahead, hopeful for what the future holds.

"I can hardly believe it's been 5 years. That seems so far out from when we opened, and now we've got the next 5 years to plan for," says Carlson.
