CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) - A boot with a possible human leg bone in it has washed ashore on a Southern California beach.

Police say it was discovered before dawn Wednesday in Carlsbad.

Josh Mercado tells KNSD-TV that he was riding his bike on the beach at around 3:30 a.m. when he found a black boot like a fisherman's wader in the water.

He turned it upside down and the 18-inch bone fell out. Mercado says there also was a sock in the boot.

It's unclear how long the boot had been in the water. No other bones were found nearby.

The bone was taken to the San Diego County medical examiner's office for investigation.
