LOS ANGELES (AP) - A new poll on California's race for governor finds that Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown maintains a strong lead over Republican challenger Neel Kashkari and that few voters could even identify the GOP candidate in the Nov. 4 election.

The USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times Poll released Friday finds that if the election were held today, Brown would defeat Kashkari 57 percent to 32 percent among registered voters. Kashkari does slightly better among likely voters.

The poll also found that 78 percent of registered voters correctly identified Brown as the incumbent while 79 percent were unsure of the Republican candidate's name.

The poll surveyed 1,507 registered voters statewide from Sept. 2-8. It has an overall sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
