WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Polish prosecutors have sent a request to extradite Roman Polanski to a regional court, saying the director's Polish citizenship is not a legal obstacle to his extradition to the United States.
The request on Tuesday is a procedural step and it does not indicate that Polanski will necessarily be extradited in connection with a 1977 sex crime. The decision on his extradition will fall first to the court, and then, if it recommends extradition, the case would be taken up by the justice minister.
Many Polish leaders are strongly opposed to extraditing the 81-year-old to the United States. Polanski himself said recently he hoped that Poland will not extradite him.
Based on the U.S. request, prosecutors questioned him last week in Krakow. He is in Poland preparing a new film.
