A report about an alleged assault and attempted kidnapping in Redding on Saturday turned out to be a hoax, the Redding Police Department said Wednesday.

On Monday authorities received a call about an assault and attempted kidnapping that happened Saturday near the beginning of the Sacramento River Trail at the Harlan Drive cul-de-sac.

The alleged victim, a juvenile, told police she was jogging near the beginning of the trail when a man approached her and forced her into the bushes.

Investigators say that after interviewing several witnesses and collecting evidence they dsicovered girl was lying to police. When asked, she admitted that the kidnapping was in fact fabricated and her injuries were self-inflicted.

Police have forwarded the report to the Shasta County District Attorney's office and say the girl could face charges for filing a false police report.

Investigators say the false report is in no way related to the alleged kidnapping attempt of a 14-year-old girl on the Iron Mountain Trail Head in Keswick Saturday night. That incident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.
