A man is in critical condition after a routine traffic stop turned into an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning.
Oroville Police officers attempted to stop a 1999 Honda Accord around 3:30 a.m. at the 1200 block of 12th Street in Oroville. Officers asked the driver, 37-year-old Jeremy Hunter, to step out of the vehicle. Hunter stepped out of his vehicle and pulled a loaded handgun from the waistband of his pants. Officers assisting in the stop shot at Hunter, striking him several times in the upper body area, according to detectives at the scene. During the incident one of the Oroville Police Officers was shot in the hand.
Both Hunter and the officer were taken to Oroville hospital. Hunter was transferred to Enloe Medical Center and is in critical condition. The officer sustained a non-life threatening injury and will undergo surgery on the hand.
The female passenger of the Honda was taken into custody for questioning.
The Butte County Officer-Involved Shooting Protocol Team has been activated and is investigating the shooting.
CALTRANS has placed a detour at 10th Avenue and Oro Dam Road while detectives continue their investigation.
