LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police shot and killed a suspect armed with a knife in the heart of the Hollywood tourist district.

The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. Friday after the Los Angeles Police Department received a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

LAPD spokeswoman Meghan Aguilar says the man had a knife and was shot while he was approaching officers.

Police say he was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.

No officers were injured.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the shooting temporarily closed the busy intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, just steps from the Walk of Fame and near popular restaurants and nightclubs.
