HERCULES, Calif. (AP) — Police are investigating reports of the brutal assault of a transgender teen as he was using the bathroom at a Northern California high school.
Police say the 15-year-old youth told police he was leaving a Hercules High School bathroom on Monday when three boys pushed him inside a stall and physically and sexually assaulted him.
Hercules police Officer Connie Van Putten says officials are treating the incident as a hate crime.
The Bay Area News Group reports (http://bit.ly/1onHvyR) the teen had been exercising his right under a new law to use a bathroom that matched his gender identity. He was taken to a hospital Monday for treatment.
Van Putten says detectives interviewed witnesses Monday. The suspects were described only as being 16 to 17 years old, but thus far no suspects have been identified.
