Chico Police and the Chico Unified School District are cancelling the Hmong New Year celebration Sunday at Bidwell Junior High School, following Saturday's shootout on the streets of Chico. According to investigators, after interviewing the four men in custody connected with Saturday's violent incident on Cohasset Road, it would be prudent to cancel the final day of the two-day event. Saturday around 1:15pm, shots rang out near Flyer's convenience store off Cohasset Road. Witnesses reported several Asian men from two cars firing at each other before crashing seperately in the parking lot behind Panda Express. Police say four of the men were arrested by K-Mart, while three others remain at large. One was spotted by witnesses carrying a handgun. Police say the men in custody were in town for the annual celebration, and come from Sacramento, Marysville, and Yuba City. No bystanders were hurt in the altercation, but one suspect appeared to have a serious injury to his hand. Police plan to release more details Sunday, but say a fight broke out at the celebration at Bidwell earlier in the day. They are investigating the possibility that it is connected to the shootout.
