Police say a Redding man who believed he was shooting at people chasing him Thursday afternoon, may have been suffering from mental illness.
Redding police responded to reports of gunshots at the 7000 block of Sacramento Drive around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.
When officers arrived 50-year-old Ronald Winsell told them he had fired a single shot from a .223 caliber rifle at a group of people across the street. Winsell told police the group had been chasing him, and fired shots at him just moments earlier.
After speaking with witnesses, investigators determined there was never a group of people chasing Winsell.
The people Winsell fired at were actually doing construction on a home across the street from his house. Fortunately the bullet did not strike anyone.
Winsell was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon.
