Gridley’s police chief says he will be discussing crosswalk safety at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, and specifically addressing the crosswalk where a 14-year-old girl was struck and killed Friday morning.

A memorial is growing at the corner of East Gridley Road and Fairview Drive, where police say 47-year-old Maria Saldago struck 14-year-old Yamara Elizondo at the crosswalk a little before 8 a.m. Friday.

In an interview with Action News Now, Chief Dean Price said “this is a crosswalk frequently used by our high school kids. I plan on seeing if there are more measures we can take to increase visibility here.

Investigators say Maria Saldago has not been arrested, and they say it does not appear drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
