Chico Police say the man who reported being shot near N. Cedar Street Friday morning fabricated the story after accidently shooting himself in the hand.

Chico Police responded to an apartment complex on the 1200 block of North Cedar Street after 30-year-old Thomas Cadotte reported being shot in the hand around 11:00 a.m. Friday.

Cadotte reportedly knocked on a door of one of the apartments at 1205 N. Cedar St. saying he had been shot by a man with a black revolver.

When police arrived Cadotte reported a black man shot him after an altercation outside the complex. Police searched the area, and didn't find anyone.

Cadotte was transported from the scene in an ambulance.

Police called for a K-9 unit and began investigating the situation.

As the officers conducted their investigation they found that Cadotte's story was not matching the evidence at the scene. Evidence showed that the shooting actually occurred inside Cadotte's apartment.

Additional evidence found at the scene indicated that Cadotte had not been truthful about what actually occurred.

Following the investigation police determined that Cadotte had been in possession of a handgun. Investigators concluded he had accidentally shot himself in the hand, so he fabricated the story.
