An alleged rapist held Sutter County Sheriff’s deputies to at bay for more than three hours after he holed up in a Live Oak residence last Saturday. The suspect was eventually detained and no one was injured in the standoff.

Abel Arteaga Torres, 25, appeared in a Sutter County Superior courtroom Monday facing a slew of charges related to the alleged rape of his spouse at her Live Oak residence. Undersheriff Jeff Pierce said the suspect held his ex-spouse with a weapon that was not a firearm and proceeded to rape her.

The victim alleged the attacked between Feb. 3 and Feb. 6. The suspect was booked into Sutter County Jail on $1 million bond. Torres is facing a sentencing enhancement for using a weapon in the rape, a charge punishable by 25-years-to-life in prison.

In addition to the alleged sexual assault, Torres is suspected to be drive-by shooter in Gridley that sent one person to the hospital Feb. 5. No charges have been filed against the suspect in that case, however police are still investigating.

Torres is scheduled to be in court Feb. 17.
