What many thought would be a high-scoring affair turned out to be a defensive battle. It was three yards and a cloud of dust! Nothing flashy, just two gritty teams grinding it out, fitting for a battle between crosstown rivals.

Pleasant Valley is the king of Almond Bowl 45, knocking off Chico 13-6 at University Stadium on Friday. The Vikings, who snapped a four-game losing streak in the rivalry affair, improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the EASRL. Chico dropped to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the EASRL.

The rivalry series is now tied at 22-22-1.

The game was controlled by the defenses, as neither team was able to get much going offensively. But no matter how many defensive stops there were, the offenses were rarely able to sustain the momentum!

The Vikings grabbed the lead in the fourth quarter on the strength of running back Jordan Cooley's short touchdown run. Cooley and Ryan Busby combined to rush for more than 125 yards and 2 scores.

Chico quarterback Creed Smith finished 6-of-23 for 50 yards and one touchdown.

Pleasant Valley hosts Paradise next Friday. Chico will take on Foothill in Palo Cedro.
