Pine tree falls onto converted shed, killing sleeping man

Many pine trees fell in the Paradise area today, but one of those massive pines came crashing down onto a small building behind a home on Lofty Lane.

"It's clear the tree struck directly on this building and struck the individual who was in bed," said Lt. Al Smith, with the Butte County Sheriff's Office.

A 29-year-old man died at the scene, and neighbors say his dog did too.

Shortly after, next door, another large pine toppled, knocking down power lines in its path.

That stopped Butte County Sheriff's Deputies from leaving the scene until PG&E was able to de-energize the power lines, says Smith.

Smith says the tree fell from a neighbor's backyard at around 7am.

Those neighbors tell Action News Now it was one of many trees that fell around their property within the span of a couple hours.

The first, they say, was another tall pine that hit their pool, boat, and house.

But when the pine in their backyard fell shortly after, they called 9-1-1 (around 7:20am).

"The root system did not appear to be compromised, it seemed to be a healthy tree, so that just kind of tells you how strong the winds are," Smith said.

The man who lives on the property where the pine fell from helped emergency crews cut up the tree with his chainsaw.

The woman who lives with him tells us the he also turned off the power after yet another pine landed on a gas line.

She says he acted heroically this morning.
